In a heart-wrenching incident in Namabasa Ward, Mbale city, eastern Uganda, a newborn baby girl was rescued after being abandoned in a sugarcane plantation. The infant, discovered by Sarah Namono on her way home from church, was found in a deep manhole concealed under dry weeds.

The alarm was raised by an elderly woman who heard the cries of the abandoned baby. Namono, along with others, quickly responded, uncovering the infant covered in maggots, particularly in her private parts and lower body. Promptly, they bathed the baby with warm water before reporting the distressing discovery to the Half London police post.

The police wasted no time and took the baby to Namatala Health Centre IV for immediate medical attention, given the critical condition in which she was found. Later, the infant was transferred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment.

Grace Akareut, the officer in charge of Half London police post, expressed strong condemnation for the heartless act of abandoning a newborn after a full nine months of carrying the child. The infant’s condition, covered in maggots, highlights the severity of the abandonment and the immediate need for medical intervention.

The identity of the baby’s mother remains unknown, leaving authorities concerned about the circumstances that led to this distressing incident. Police are actively investigating the case to locate the mother and determine the reasons behind such a cruel abandonment.

Local authorities are urging anyone with information related to the abandoned newborn to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with residents expressing their shock and concern for the well-being of the abandoned baby.

This tragic event underscores the importance of raising awareness about safe and legal alternatives for parents facing difficulties in caring for their newborns. Efforts are being made to ensure the swift recovery of the rescued infant and to provide the necessary care and support for her future well-being.
