Thousands of traders have accused top officials from the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) and Federation of Traders Association (FUTA) of corruption in a scandal that threatens to dismantle the once-respected traders’ unions.

According to documents obtained, KACITA leaders John Kabanda, Dr. Tadius Musoke, Moses Lwegaba, and Abel Mwesigwa allegedly signed off on millions of shillings during a secretive State House meeting. Each leader is reported to have pocketed UGX 150 million, allegedly to abandon their advocacy roles for traders and align with other interests.

“It is extremely disappointing that these leaders, who were trusted to present our concerns to the government, chose financial gain over representing the traders’ struggles. Instead of fighting for solutions, they were bribed and abandoned us,” said a trader who wished to remain anonymous.

The trader further condemned the leaders, calling the situation “a significant setback” for traders’ efforts to push for positive reforms in the business community.

Attempts to contact the accused officials were unsuccessful, as their phones remained switched off.

KACITA, which was established in 2001 and later re-registered in 2009 as KACITA-Uganda, has long served as a vital business support association. Its mission is to facilitate trade, unite the business community, and create a more sustainable market environment. This scandal, however, raises concerns about the future of the organization’s credibility and its ability to advocate for traders’ rights effectively.
