Police have arrested four suspects who allegedly used a vehicle with its number plate concealed by MK Army stickers to steal 1.1 billion Uganda shillings from a taxi intercepted at Nakilebe along Masaka Road. The suspects include police and UPDF impersonators, as well as a former Police OC from Namayingo.
According to police reports, on September 19, 2023, a group of five individuals intercepted a taxi at Nakilebe along Masaka Road and robbed the occupants of over 1.1 billion shillings (317,900 USD).
The perpetrators were disguised in a police uniform with the rank of ASP (Assistant Superintendent of Police) and a UPDF uniform. Three others were dressed in plain clothes, including former OC station Namayingo, Kakana James. The suspects were driving a Super Custom, and the vehicle’s number plates were concealed with MK Army stickers at the time of the robbery.
Through CCTV footage from a nearby energy station and shared intelligence, four out of the five suspects were apprehended, including Lubega Moses, Nuwagaba Josephat aka Jose, Kyomuhendo Richard aka Ricky, and ASP Kakana James, the former OC Station Namayingo.
During the search of their homes and interrogation, the suspects admitted to participating in the robbery. Recovered exhibits included the motor vehicle with registration number UAW 187, the Super Custom used in the robbery, motor vehicle UBN 291, a Subaru purchased with the proceeds of the robbed money, sofa sets, TV sets, cooking utensils, and other items.
The OC station Namayingo was arrested in Nansana, Wakiso, after escaping arrest in Namayingo. The suspects appeared before a Grade 1 magistrate in Mpigi on charges of aggravated robbery.
The acting Police Spokesperson, Hadijah Namutebi, condemned the actions of a person entrusted to protect lives and property turning against them to participate in an aggravated case of robbery. She emphasized that the actions of the individuals did not represent the police force as a whole, as it was an isolated incident.
