8 People Die Instantly, Several Injured In Truck Accident In Kakumiro
Around nine o’clock on Tuesday night, disaster hit Kyabasegu hamlet in the Kisengwe sub-county as a terrible accident took place.
An overloaded fuso truck with the license plate UBE 854D hauling more than 70 market sellers lost control while negotiating a dangerous turn. Unfortunately, the car veered off the road, flipping many times, and instantly killed eight people. Several of the accident victims are from the districts of Kyenjojo, Mubende, and Kakumiro.
According to some survivors who spoke with The New Light Paper, the motorist was going beyond the speed limit when the accident happened. As the driver departed the scene right away following the collision, some of the victims made frantic attempts to jump off the truck in an effort to escape death.
As an eyewitness named Joseph Niwaha recalled, “I heard cries for help and rushed to the scene, finding survivors in dire need of assistance.” According to Johnson Tulinawe, a different witness, “the bodies of the deceased individuals were trapped beneath the vehicle when the first rescue team arrived.”
According to the Albertine region police spokesperson, Julius Hakiza, the identities of the people who died and were hurt have not yet been verified. He mentioned that the injured had also been carried to the Kakumiro Health Center IV mortuary, where the corpses of the deceased had been transported in order to undergo postmortem exams.
Drivers are being strongly cautioned by Kakumiro District Chairman Joseph Sentayi Ssenkusu to avoid overloading and running vehicles in hazardous mechanical conditions.
